Purpose of the Role

The firm has strong and growing media and not for profit sectors. Within these sectors there are a significant number of clients who are eligible for the creative sector tax reliefs - particularly Theatre Relief, and Museums Galleries and Exhibitions Relief.

There are other clients eligible for claims under the Film, TV, Animation and Video Game reliefs.

Due to an increasing workload, the firm is now looking to a recruit a Tax Manager with specialist skills in this area, to work within the Corporate and Business Tax Team. Details of the role are given below, but essentially it will involve the supervising and quality control of claims for these reliefs as well as advising clients on structuring of operations to meet the relevant conditions and to maximise potential claims. The successful candidate will be expected to advise more generally on corporate and business tax issues outside of the creative sector credits. In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to help promote our creative sector services externally in conjunction with our theatre, media and not for profit teams.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

The right candidate would be expected to:

  • Advise clients on technical application and mechanics of the creative sector reliefs including structuring of operations and identifying planning opportunities to maximise claims.
  • Prepare larger creative sector tax relief claims and corporation tax returns for commercial and non-profit clients.
  • Supervise and review the preparation of smaller claims, including the coaching and developing of junior team members.
  • Support our General Practice (Audit & Accounts) Theatre and Non-Profit teams through the review of some annual computations and tax relief claims for their audit clients. As well as working closely with them to provide support for technical tax queries that come out of their work and their clients. -Maintaining and overseeing quality assurance to ensure all deliverables are of a high technical standard, including working closely with senior managers and directors in developing effective compliance processes to manage tax risk.
  • Liaise with HMRC in respect of technical issues, tax enquiry cases and voluntary disclosure work and prepare the necessary reports/response to be submitted to HMRC.
  • Maintaining portfolio of creative sector clients and proactively dealing with management aspects of project delivery including supervising junior colleagues, building relationships with clients & HMRC, meeting deadlines, managing WIP and billing
  • Maintaining technical knowledge and keeping abreast of any changes in the creative sector regimes.

Outside of the creative sector, they will also be expected to be involved in:

  • Managing and reviewing preparation of corporation tax returns and other compliance work, often for complex groups, international or larger clients of the firm.
  • Other specialist technical projects for example corporate group restructures, M&A advisory projects employee share schemes, EIS/SEIS advice, tax valuations etc.
